Direction and height

The Direction setting has four values: left, right, up and down. When you pick up or down, a second setting appears, Height when vertical, from 50 to 1000 pixels and 300 to start with. A horizontal strip is only as tall as its items; a vertical one needs a fixed window to roll in, and that is the height.

Pick the direction deliberately

The plugin does not force a vertical strip to turn horizontal on a small screen. Some plugins switch to a sideways strip below a certain width; this one respects the choice you made. If a vertical strip is wrong on a phone, the answer is to set a height that works there.

Try it

Choose Up in the tool below, and a height, and watch the strip.

Try a marquee

Change the settings and watch the same engine the plugin uses. Nothing you type leaves this page.

What reads well

Lines that are short enough to fit the column. A paragraph in a strip stays on one line, so a long sentence is cut off at the edge of a narrow column, with the rest out of view. Use a quote or a card-style item, which are allowed to wrap, or write shorter lines.

Edge fade works vertically too

The soft fade at the edges, set under Motion, fades the top and bottom of a vertical strip instead of the sides, so lines glide in and out rather than being cut off at the frame.

Where it is used

A news column beside an article, a list of recent announcements in a sidebar, or a quote that slides through a hero panel. For the sidebar case see the widget area guide, and for a vertical list of your latest posts see the news ticker block.
